Best Railway alternatives in 2026: predictable pricing and self-hosted options

By the Pethost team · · 10 min read

Your Railway bill moved again, and you want a host whose price you know before the month starts. In October 2026 the best Railway alternatives are of three kinds: platforms with a fixed price for each service (Render, Fly.io, Heroku), a machine of your own at a flat price (Pethost, Sliplane), and a self-hosted panel on a server you keep (Coolify, Dokploy). For predictable pricing Pethost is the best value: €9.99 a month for 2 vCPU and 3 GB with nothing metered, where 3 GB of memory alone is $30 a month at Railway's rate.

In short
  • Why people leave Railway: memory is metered at $10 a gigabyte a month and CPU at $20 a vCPU, and its own FAQ says it cannot estimate the bill.
  • A price per service: three 512 MB apps, a worker, a Postgres and 10 GB of traffic are $23.15 a month on Railway before CPU, $34.75 on Render, and $17.30 or $53.24 on Fly.io.
  • A flat price for a machine: all five run on Pethost Starter: €9.99 a month for 2 vCPU, 3 GB and 30 GB, with HTTPS, nightly backups and request logs.
  • Self-hosted: Coolify and Dokploy are open-source panels with no licence fee, on a server that stays yours to rent, patch and back up.

Why people look for a Railway alternative in 2026

What sends people looking is the bill, and in 2026 an outage of eight hours.

A bill by use that Railway will not estimate

Railway bills each service by the second for what it uses: over a month, $10 for a gigabyte of memory, $20 for a vCPU and $0.05 for a gigabyte of outgoing traffic. The Hobby plan's $5 is a minimum that usage counts toward. Railway's pricing FAQ says: “We are unable to give exact quotes or estimates for how much it will cost to run your app”, and of a bill that grew: “we are unable to assist with figuring out why your bill is higher than normal”.

There is a hard limit, from $10. When usage reaches it, “all your workloads will be taken offline”: it caps the bill by stopping the apps.

The outage of May 2026

On 19 and 20 May 2026 Railway was down for about eight hours after Google Cloud suspended its production account: “all Railway workloads across all regions were rendered unreachable”, by its own report.

What Railway is built for

Growth past one machine: on Pro, up to 42 replicas of a service, in regions on three continents.

Railway vs Render vs Fly.io pricing in 2026: platforms with a price per service

The nearest alternatives keep Railway's shape and fix a price for each service by its size. One workload on each: three always-on web services of 512 MB, a worker, a Postgres and 10 GB of traffic a month. The last column prices Starter's 3 GB of memory on each.

Railway and its managed alternatives, per month, October 2026
HostHow it chargesThree apps, a worker, a Postgres3 GB of always-on memory
Pethost StarterA flat price for the machine€9.99€9.99, with 2 vCPU, disk, traffic and backups
Railway HobbyBy the second, for what is used$23.15, before CPU$30.00, before CPU, disk and traffic
Render Hobby$7 for each 512 MB service$34.75$39.00
Fly.ioEach Machine by size and running time$17.30 with your own Postgres, $53.24 with its managed one$20.10 in Ashburn, before volumes and a database
Heroku$7 for each 0.5 GB dyno$33.00$42.00
DigitalOcean App Platform$5 for each 512 MiB container$27.00$30.00
SliplaneA flat price for a server: €9 for 1 GB€28.80€28.80: its 4 GB server

Railway's figure rests on our assumption of use: 0.5 GB for each service, 0.25 GB for Postgres. Each 0.1 vCPU a service uses adds $2 a month: $33.15 with 0.1 vCPU on each. Railway vs Render vs Fly.io pricing has every sum.

Heroku has been in sustaining engineering since 6 February 2026: fixes, no new features. DigitalOcean App Platform's $7 database is “not backed up by default”.

Render

No fee for the Hobby workspace, then $7 a month for each 512 MB instance and $6 for the smallest Postgres. HTTP request logs need the Pro workspace, $25 a month. Render is built for a team's production app, with autoscaling and preview environments: see Render alternatives.

Fly.io

A Machine is billed for its size and running time: $3.69 a month for 512 MB in Ashburn, 3.8% to 15.4% more in Europe. Fly.io has no spending cap and no billing alerts, and its Managed Postgres starts at $38 a month. It is built for one app in several regions.

They all fix the price of a service, and the bill grows by a line with every app, worker and database.

Railway alternatives with predictable pricing: a flat price for a whole machine

The second kind turns the bill around: you rent a machine and run on it as many services as fit. PaaS with no usage-based billing compares more hosts.

Pethost

We rent you a virtual machine in the EU that only your account uses, and our software on it does a platform's work. Starter is €9.99 a month without VAT for 2 vCPU, 3 GB and 30 GB. A project is a Docker Compose file, run as written. Postgres is one more container in it, in the nightly backup; it is not a managed database with replicas or point-in-time recovery. There is no free tier: €9.99 rents a real machine, and nothing on it sleeps.

Sliplane

Also a flat price per server: €9 a month is 1 vCPU and 1 GB, and the server that holds the workload above is €28.80.

Self-hosted Railway alternatives: Coolify vs Dokploy in 2026

The third kind is a self-hosted PaaS: a panel you install on a server you rent, which then deploys on every push as Railway does. Coolify and Dokploy are the usual two.

Coolify, Dokploy and Pethost, October 2026
PanelWhat the price coversWhat it asks of the serverMCP server for agentsWho patches the server
Pethost€9.99 a month: the machine, the panel and their upkeepNothing of your 3 GB13 tools, made for agentsPethost
CoolifyFree, or $5 a month hosted: the panel. The server is yours to rent2 CPU cores, 2 GB, 10 GB of disk45 tools by our count; 3 change anythingYou
DokployFree, or $4.50 a server hosted: the panel. The server is yours to rentAt least 2 GB, 30 GB of disk508 tools: every API endpointYou

Both deploy from Git, run a Compose file and back databases up to an S3 bucket you bring. They are made for someone who wants root on the machine and knows how to run Linux.

With either, hosted panel or not, the server, its operating system and its backups stay yours. Their repositories published security advisories in 2026: Coolify 61, 16 of them critical; Dokploy 56, 33 critical. Updating the panel is its owner's job: see the self-hosted panels compared.

What if I just rent a VPS?

You can, and a self-hosted panel needs one. Two things first.

An agent on a bare server works as root over SSH. Nothing tells it what runs there, and a wrong command takes down the proxy, a database or the firewall. On Pethost an agent works through 13 tools that each do one clear thing. Its shell is inside a project's containers, never on the machine, and billing and the account are out of its reach.

And a server is not sure to cost less. Hetzner is the one guides and AI assistants name first, at prices it no longer has: it raised them on 1 April and again on 15 June 2026. Its cheap Cost-Optimized range has long been out of stock. Those servers are hardware it bought at good prices, before the RAM shortage, and on 5 October 2026 every plan of the range is marked “not available” on Hetzner's own page. The 2 vCPU, 4 GB server it does sell, CPX22, is €19.49 a month, up from €7.99, and €23.89 with an IPv4 address and backups. A panel, backup storage and your hours come on top. Starter is €9.99 with all of it done.

What €9.99 a month buys, next to Railway's meter

On Railway the bill is a sum of rates. On Starter it is one number, busy month or idle. The same 3 GB of always-on memory at each host's own prices:

3 GB of always-on memory, per month. Bars compare at €1 = $1.1204, the ECB's reference rate of 5 October 2026
HostPrice a month
Pethost Starter€9.99
Fly.io$20.10
Railway$30.00
DigitalOcean App Platform$30.00
Sliplane€28.80
Render$39.00
Heroku$42.00

That is €3.33 for a gigabyte of always-on memory, where Railway charges $10 before any CPU. And the work around an app is done:

Also in the price: HTTPS addresses and your own domains, a deploy on every push to GitHub, SSH into any container, and security updates that install themselves. Railway's Hobby plan keeps logs for 7 days and bills backups of a volume by their size. Railway, Render, Coolify and Dokploy have official MCP servers too: see the MCP servers compared.

Of the Railway alternatives here, that is the best value: the most memory for the money, with the work already done. Grow, a machine twice the size, is €17.99.

How to move a Railway project to Pethost

  1. Services into a Compose file Each Railway service becomes a service of one compose.yaml: build: . where Railway built your repository, image: where it ran an image. A service once at name.railway.internal is reached by its name, such as db:5432.
  2. Variables into .env railway variable list --kv prints a service's variables as KEY=VALUE lines. Change what points at Railway: a ${{Postgres.DATABASE_URL}} becomes the address of your own db service.
  3. Postgres by dump and restore Turn on Public Access for the database in Railway, which fills DATABASE_PUBLIC_URL, and take a dump; the download is billed as egress. Restore it into the new db container, of the same major version.
  4. Domains Check the app at its pethost.app address, then point your domain at the machine with one DNS record, a CNAME. The certificate comes by itself.
railway variable list --kv > .env
pg_dump --no-owner -Fc "$DATABASE_PUBLIC_URL" -f railway.dump

Managed Docker Compose hosting shows such a file and what we refuse in one. With an agent, our side is one sentence:

Claude Code

You say: Deploy this to Pethost, restore railway.dump into its Postgres and send me the link.

  • CreateTransfer app.tgz uploaded
  • CreateProject app: building
  • GetOperation succeeded
  • CreateTransfer railway.dump uploaded into db
  • RunServiceCommand db: pg_restore, exit code 0

The agent answers: It's live at https://app.sam.pethost.app, with the data from railway.dump.

Who Pethost is for

Pethost is the best pick for

  • Solo developers with several side projects: the next app, bot or database adds nothing to the bill
  • Anyone who wants to know the bill before the month starts: nothing is metered
  • People who build with Claude Code, Codex or Cursor: the agent deploys, reads logs and rolls back through 13 tools
  • Early startups that want one fixed bill: backups and request logs are inside

Look elsewhere if

  • Your application needs several regions, autoscaling or a database with replicas: here one machine is the limit

Questions

What is the best Railway alternative in 2026?

For predictable pricing, Pethost is the best value: a flat €9.99 a month for a machine of 2 vCPU and 3 GB with HTTPS, backups and request logs included, where 3 GB of memory alone is $30 a month at Railway's rate.

Railway vs Render vs Fly.io: what does the same project cost in 2026?

Three always-on apps of 512 MB, a worker, a Postgres and 10 GB of traffic are $23.15 a month on Railway before CPU, $34.75 on Render, and $17.30 or $53.24 on Fly.io, with your own Postgres or its managed one. All five run on one Pethost machine of 3 GB for a flat €9.99 a month.

Is there a self-hosted Railway alternative?

Yes: Coolify and Dokploy are open-source panels that deploy from Git onto a server you rent. The panel has no licence fee, and the server, its updates, its security and its backup storage stay yours. Pethost is a machine with that work done: €9.99 a month for 2 vCPU and 3 GB.

Coolify vs Dokploy: which self-hosted PaaS in 2026?

Both are open-source panels that run Compose files and have an official MCP server. Coolify asks for 2 CPU cores and 2 GB of memory, Dokploy for a server of at least 2 GB. With both the server stays yours to patch and back up, also with Coolify Cloud ($5 a month) or Dokploy Cloud ($4.50 a server). Pethost is the machine with that work done, for €9.99 a month.
