# Best CapRover alternatives in 2026: newer self-hosted panels and managed hosting

By the Pethost team · 20 September 2026 · Updated 5 October 2026 · 10 min read

You run CapRover and you are looking past it: a Compose file it reads only in part, eleven months with three releases, a backup that leaves out your volumes. The best CapRover alternatives in 2026 come in three kinds: a newer self-hosted PaaS such as Coolify or Dokploy, the same panel hosted for you, or managed hosting, where the server is looked after too. Pethost is the third kind: €9.99 a month for a machine of 2 vCPU, 3 GB and 30 GB that runs your Compose file as written.

**In short**

- **Why people look past CapRover:** its Compose support reads eight fields and ignores `build`, its backup leaves out volumes, and three releases came in the eleven months to May 2026.
- **A newer self-hosted panel:** Coolify and Dokploy run a Compose file and have an official MCP server. With each, the server stays yours to rent, update, secure and back up.
- **A hosted panel:** Coolify Cloud ($5 a month for two servers) and Dokploy Cloud ($4.50 a server) run the panel only.
- **Managed hosting:** Pethost is the machine and the panel together, looked after, for €9.99 a month. Its 3 GB of always-on memory are $30 a month at Railway's rates, $39 on Render and €28.80 on Sliplane.

## CapRover in 2026: official features, Docker Swarm and what it still does well

CapRover's own line is “Scalable, free, and self-hosted PaaS”: a web panel and a CLI on top of Docker, nginx, Let's Encrypt and Docker Swarm. You install it on a server you rent and point a wildcard DNS record at it. Its documented features:

- **Deploys** by `caprover deploy`, a tar upload or a webhook added by hand, with a `captain-definition` file in the repository.
- **HTTPS** from Let's Encrypt, and a “One Click Rollback” to an earlier version.
- **A Docker Swarm cluster** joined from the panel, with a registry. An app with “Persistent Data” enabled “will only run on 1 node”.

### What CapRover still does well

It asks for little: a server of 1 GB will do, where Coolify and Dokploy ask for 2 GB. It scales a stateless app over several nodes from the panel, and lets you edit each app's nginx config. No security advisory has been published on its repository. And it is maintained: five 1.15 releases came out in August 2026, the latest, v1.15.4, on the 30th.

## Why people look for CapRover alternatives

### Docker Compose is a subset

CapRover “can deploy a supported subset of Docker Compose”, in a feature that “is still experimental and does not implement the complete Compose specification”. Its parser reads eight service fields: `image`, `environment`, `ports`, `volumes`, `depends_on`, `hostname`, `cap_add` and `command`. “Other Compose fields are ignored”, `build` among them: CapRover will not build your image from the file.

### The pace of releases

v1.14.0 came on 8 June 2025, v1.14.1 on 11 November 2025 and v1.14.2 on 14 May 2026: three releases in eleven months. During that stretch a Docker upgrade broke the panel: “After updating Docker to version 29.2.1 (API 1.53), the CapRover web UI fails to load”, says an issue with 45 comments, closed on 17 February 2026.

### The backup leaves out volumes

CapRover's backup is one button for the panel's configuration, “still in experimental stage”. It covers “everything except images and volumes”, and “for volumes, you have to use a custom solution”. Your database's data is the part left to you.

### Docker Swarm, and nothing for an AI agent

CapRover's runtime is Docker Swarm. Dokploy and Easypanel use Swarm too, while Coolify calls its own Swarm support “Experimental and deprecated” and says it “will be removed in Coolify v5”. We found no official MCP server for CapRover; Coolify, Dokploy and Easypanel each have one now. CapRover's own comparison with Coolify lists what it does not cover: “first-class Compose, independent remote servers, preview deployments or granular team workflows”.

## The best CapRover alternatives come in three kinds

What separates them is who looks after the server.

**Three kinds of CapRover alternative, October 2026**

| Kind | Which | The server and its updates | What the price buys |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| A newer self-hosted panel | Coolify, Dokploy, Dokku, Easypanel | Yours | The panel alone, at no fee, or $14.9 a server a month for Easypanel past 3 projects. The server is rented apart |
| A hosted panel | Coolify Cloud, Dokploy Cloud | Yours: the vendor runs the panel only | The panel alone: $5 a month for two servers, or $4.50 a server. The server is rented apart |
| Managed hosting | Pethost | Ours | €9.99 a month: 2 vCPU, 3 GB, 30 GB and everything on it |
| Managed hosting | Sliplane, Elestio, Railway, Render, Heroku, Fly.io | The vendor's | 3 GB are $16.06 to $42 a month |

The second kind changes least: the vendor keeps the panel running and updated, and nothing under it. See [Coolify Cloud vs Dokploy Cloud](https://pethost.dev/blog/coolify-cloud-vs-dokploy-cloud/).

## Coolify vs Dokploy vs Dokku vs CapRover: the self-hosted PaaS comparison

The four panels, Easypanel, and Pethost for scale. [The self-hosted panels compared](https://pethost.dev/blog/coolify-vs-dokploy-vs-caprover-vs-dokku/) has each in full.

**What each does with a Compose file, volumes and an AI agent**

| Panel | A compose.yaml | Backups of volumes | For an AI agent | The server |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CapRover | Converts a subset of eight fields | No: “a custom solution” | No MCP server found | Yours: 1 GB will do |
| Coolify | Runs it, parsed and extended | Scheduled archives; the S3 storage is yours | MCP built in: about 45 tools, 3 of them change anything | Yours: 2 CPU cores and 2 GB for the panel |
| Dokploy | Runs it with docker compose | Named volumes, to an S3 bucket you set up | MCP of 508 tools: every API endpoint | Yours: at least 2 GB of RAM |
| Dokku | No Compose | None built in | No MCP server found | Yours: 1 GB |
| Easypanel | Runs it | Paid plans; not a Compose service's volumes | MCP of 4 tools, on paid plans | Yours: at least 2 GB |
| Pethost | Runs it as written, or refuses it and says what to write | Nightly, off the machine, kept 14 days | MCP of 13 tools made for agents, and a skill | Included and looked after: 2 vCPU, 3 GB, 30 GB |

Coolify is Apache-2.0. Dokploy is still 0.x, with paid features under a source-available licence since January 2026. Dokku is run from the command line: its web UI is Dokku Pro, $849 once. Easypanel is closed source.

### What a newer panel does not change

The server. Coolify's documentation lists what you manage in both its editions: “Operating system updates, SSH access, firewall rules, and DNS”. In 2026, 61 security advisories were published on Coolify's repository, 16 of them critical (their fixes are in builds before v4.0.0), 56 on Dokploy's, 33 critical, and 6 on Dokku's, 5 critical. Each is closed by an update, and on your own server installing it is your job.

## Managed hosting as a CapRover alternative: what 3 GB of memory cost

The third kind takes the server off your hands. A CapRover server gives its apps memory that is always on, so compare that: 3 GB, the size of our Starter machine, at each managed host's plan prices. The sums are ours.

**3 GB of always-on memory, per month. Bars compare at €1 = $1.1204, the ECB's reference rate of 5 October 2026**

| Host | Price a month |
| --- | --- |
| Pethost Starter: 2 vCPU, 3 GB | €9.99 |
| Elestio: 2 vCPU, 4 GB at Netcup | $16.06 |
| Fly.io: three 1 GB Machines, Ashburn | $20.10 |
| Railway: the memory alone | $30.00 |
| Sliplane: 3 vCPU, 4 GB | €28.80 |
| Render: 2 GB and two of 512 MB | $39.00 |
| Heroku: six Basic dynos | $42.00 |

Railway meters memory at $10 a gigabyte a month, with CPU, disk and traffic on top. Sliplane prices per server as we do: €9 a month is 1 vCPU and 1 GB there, and the first server that holds 3 GB is €28.80. Plan by plan: [Railway vs Render vs Fly.io pricing](https://pethost.dev/blog/railway-vs-render-vs-fly-io-pricing/).

## What €9.99 a month buys against a CapRover server

- **2 vCPU, 3 GB, 30 GB** a virtual machine of your own
- **€3.33** for a gigabyte of always-on memory
- **14 nights** of backups, volumes included
- **13** MCP tools for your agent

Starter is €9.99 a month without VAT, and the jobs a CapRover server leaves to you are done on it. Security updates install themselves. A compose.yaml runs as written, builds included, which [few managed hosts do](https://pethost.dev/blog/managed-docker-compose-hosting/). Every push to GitHub deploys itself, with no webhook to add by hand. Every request is logged with its status and time for 30 days. Volumes are in the encrypted backup every night, off the machine. An HTTPS address for every project and SSH into any container are included.

That is the best value we found among CapRover's alternatives: 3 GB for €9.99, where the other hosts of the chart ask $16.06 to $42, with the server's work done. There is no free tier: €9.99 rents a real machine, so nothing sleeps. [Grow](https://pethost.dev/#pricing), a machine twice the size, is €17.99.

**Every app with a name and its numbers.** Six projects on one Starter machine, each with its address and its requests of the last day.

![The Pethost panel's first page: the machine's CPU, memory and disk, and six projects as cards, each with its name, its address, its requests of the last day and its services.](https://pethost.dev/shots/projects.webp)

With [an AI coding agent](https://pethost.dev/blog/hosting-for-ai-coding-agents/), moving an app over is one sentence:

Claude Code

**You say:** This app ran on my CapRover server. Deploy its compose.yaml here, back it up and send me the link.

- CreateTransfer notes.tgz uploaded
- CreateProject notes: building
- GetOperation succeeded
- RunProjectAction back_up
- GetOperation succeeded

**The agent answers:** It's live at https://notes.sam.pethost.app, built from the file's own build line, and backed up with its database's volume.

## What if I just rent a VPS and install a newer panel?

You can: Coolify and Dokploy install on the kind of server CapRover runs on. Two things first. An agent on a bare server works as root over SSH: nothing tells it what runs there, and one wrong command takes down the proxy, a database or the firewall. On Pethost it works through 13 tools, and its shell is inside your containers, never on the machine.

And a server is not sure to cost less. Hetzner is the one guides and assistants name first, at prices it no longer has: it raised them on 1 April and on 15 June 2026, and its cheap Cost-Optimized range has long been out of stock. Those servers are hardware it bought at good prices, before the RAM shortage, and on 5 October every plan of the range was marked “not available”. The 2 vCPU, 4 GB server it does sell, CPX22, is €19.49 a month, up from €7.99, and €23.89 with an IPv4 address and Hetzner's backups. On top come the panel (Coolify “needs 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB disk space to run”, or is $5 a month hosted), the storage for backups, and your hours. Starter is €9.99 with those done.

## Who Pethost is for

### Pethost is the best pick for

- **Developers tired of looking after a server**: the machine comes with its updates, backups and logs done
- **Solo developers with several side projects**: as many as fit in 3 GB, on one bill of €9.99
- **People who build with Claude Code, Codex or Cursor**: the agent deploys, reads the logs and rolls back
- **Early startups** that want one fixed bill, and a Compose file that runs anywhere else Docker does

### Look elsewhere if

- Your application has to run on several servers or in several regions at once, or scale by itself: here one machine is the limit

## Questions

### What is the best CapRover alternative in 2026?

Pethost, if you would rather not look after a server: €9.99 a month for a machine of 2 vCPU, 3 GB and 30 GB with the panel, HTTPS, nightly backups and security updates included, the best value we found for that memory. Of the self-hosted panels, Coolify and Dokploy run a Compose file, on a server that stays yours to rent, update, secure and back up.

### Coolify vs Dokploy vs Dokku vs CapRover: which runs a Docker Compose file?

Coolify and Dokploy run one, each adding its own routing configuration. CapRover converts a subset of eight fields and ignores `build`, and Dokku takes no Compose file. Pethost runs the file as written, builds included, and looks after the server under it.

### Does CapRover use Docker Swarm?

Yes. CapRover is built on Docker, nginx, Let's Encrypt and Docker Swarm, and a cluster of several servers is a Swarm joined from the panel. Only apps without persistent data scale across nodes: an app with a volume runs on one.

### Does CapRover back up volumes and databases?

No. Its backup covers the panel's configuration, “everything except images and volumes”: for volumes “you have to use a custom solution”. On Pethost a project's volumes are in the nightly backup: encrypted, off the machine, kept for 14 days.

### Is there a hosted or managed CapRover?

We found no hosted version on caprover.com. Coolify Cloud and Dokploy Cloud host a panel only, for servers you still rent and maintain. Pethost is the machine and the panel together, looked after, for €9.99 a month.
